Happy Birthday Dad – 07/13/03

I am old enough now to know you are not perfect.
I am old enough now to understand that you always did your best.
I am old enough now to recognize that personal growth doesn’t stop.
I am old enough now to admit I still strive for your approval.

What a conundrum I must have been to a young first time father.
I was never sure how to reach you, but I always knew you would protect me.
When I wanted to play catch, I wish you had played only with me.
When my friend died, you held me as I cried.
You taught me how to drive on ice (I can never thank you enough for that).
You were there to strengthen me when my crazed ex-boyfriend climbed our house.

You taught me by example.
You taught me to be strong.
You taught me to honor my word.
You taught me to keep my commitments.
You taught me that personal convictions matter.
You taught me to protect those I love.

It is you that I fear letting down, should I fall.
I can see much of your character in me.
I am taller now, but your arms are still the safest place I know.

Silent Dancing – 05/13/97

Quiet whispers of flowing sands
Daylight fades across the land
Gentle moonlight a silent kiss
Yearning great for something missed

Silent dancers, an ancient tune
Glances hidden far too soon
Gliding softly through the dance
Wistful for a single chance

A quiet look, a gentle touch
A hopeful yearning for so much

The Stage… – 06/05/97

The tale is old, the players have changed
The fate of the world, once more the prize
Four factions, with battle lines drawn
A motley group united in defense of Life and Light

Darkness reaches to engulf the Light
Vainar the Fallen, god of Darkness and Death
Flames of Ceynara burns through the night
Deceit and destruction burn on barely restrained

One group of heroes, splintered at best
Called to defend against Darkness and Flame
Their courage must hold for Life and Light
As they struggle to define for them what is right

One priestess of Light holds out her hand
Her life defended, protected by the Jade Flame, McLain
Helped by the Lightbringer, strong arm and friend
Sir Tovis with youth his enemy, faith his savior

Alakaran of Landra, chosen of Life
The solemn Kiarsi, deep feeling nurturer
Embraced by Brianna, child of sea
Young daughter of Illiana, Life joined

Lord of sky, Schalanchar, Lord of Last Home
Whisper of insight, power well cloaked
Joined by Teran Ridoran, actor at heart
Jack of all trades and master of some

The Korindian Ginnina quiet, reserved
Set from the west as historian and guide
The desert noble… thoughtful… refined
Shrouded in mystery, a prince out of time

Always practical, often morose
RuneSong, son of the earth
A heartsick Brinchie, her family stolen
Arm of Saiderin now the Raven’s Claw

Portals to Hell open and raging
Life and Light joined in defense
Darkness and Flame poised to destroy
A small band of heroes against all of Hell

To Close a Cauldron – 06/27/97

Heroic tales have spanned all time
The trials of good raging against the night
Who stops to question the power of the Ascended
When their promises fall short of completion

To close a caldron takes a core of four
One for the Pattern, One for the Way, One for the Life, One for the Light
With strength, courage and defending friends
Perhaps four such as these will triumph for right

One for the Pattern
Gentle and sweet
This weaver challenged and courage found deep
Sacrifice of self and possessions to make the final strike

One for the Way
Refined and reserved
Master of thought pressed as never before
Courageous and left dazed as the final strike fell

One for the Life
Confused and uncertain
Faithful daughter chosen to try, devotion questioning and demanding reply
Last to be standing, the only to see what happened, hidden to all but she

One for the Light
Loving beloved to be the Lightbringer’s bride
Childlike giving, faith unshaken in the light
Voice of Archanon, left cold at the end, never the bride

Love of Light falls weeping in tears
Protector of light calls out to be heard
“My life for hers” ’twas the promise Archanon made
“I call upon your promise” with that McLain gives his life for hers

A promise made my life for hers
A promise unkept as both died that day
One left for the Light, his bride slain
One left for the Light, faith now uncertain

As Life called to Life
Her strickened demand, heard and answered
As Light called to Light
Only silence and questions

Beyond the center four others remained
The Wavedancer, the Korindian, the Sky Lord, the Brinchie
Still poised as their numbers fell
To hold back the hoard which each fought alone

The Wavedancer cries
Her beloved still stands hurt and alone
The Korindian holds
A pack of hounds kept at bay

The Sky Lord determined
To take the gargoyle alone
The Brinchie brave, but soon to be fallen
Poised against the minotaur lord and his band

The hoards closing in
It is but a matter of time
The heroes, three fallen, two dead
Two weeping and just four who defend

Their bravery noted, their courage defined
The hoard leader has failed
For while the heroes are falling
Their quest has been done

A salute between warriors
The minotaur calls for withdraw
“Take care of your dead, there will be another time”
The Brinchie refrains and the heroes are left to their own

When the hoards have withdrawn
The Brinchie, the Avanar and the Korindian assess
A portal is found and while the others morn
The three left discover the way made safe to the regained throne

“We are leaving” cried the Brinchie
“Now” to add haste, the fallen were gathered
And stumbling through the portal with heavy hearts
The success of the closing marred by the lose

Ascended, but self claimed
Who is this Ascended?
Who is this that leaves his chosen to die?
Who is this that makes promises that are not kept?

Her life given in defense of the Light
His life forfeit so that hers might be spared
His life lost for a promise now broken
One left for the Light, one left alone.
