Current mood: cranky
12:46 AM

I really had no intention of ever using the blog feature in myspace, but due to god only knows what, I'm desperate and I need to vent.

I'm about ready to break something. I haven't posted on my personal site since the beginning of March. I had a bunch of personal stuff going on and I needed to deal with it. Lets sum things up by saying that public blogging was not the way to address anything that was going on. Now that I want to blog, my site is having technical issues.

So some things of note:

* Elisabeth & Beau's wedding went off with the planned hitch.
* Mosquitoes are more likely to bite you if you eat bananas. One of the guys on my team at work eats about 2 a day and I told him this fact. He didn't believe me, then it showed up the following weekend in the Sunday paper.
* Mark Thomas tells of his campaign against the Act which requires anyone wishing to protest near the Houses of Parliament to obtain a permit. (Had me laughing out loud at work.)

Tech Hell

I think this guy uses whiteout on his monitor and has a broken drink holder on the computer too.

I've added a couple of comments, but for the most part, when I talk to tech support I rarely filter out what I'm thinking. This guy got me to the point where I needed to filter.

April Showers

I took some time off from posting to work out some stuff, but now I'm back. Too bad I wanted to start posting about 2 weeks ago and the site decided to implode. The gallery isn't back up yet, but hopefully tonight.

Last night I ended up spending most of the evening doing maintenance on the site and getting the blogs up and running. I've started work on the gallery, but decided to go to bed, which means I'll hopefully finish them up tonight.

The trials to get things put back on the server is chronicled below for those who wonder where the site went during this time...

Jumble

vt_ribbon_gray.gif Like a lot of people, I’ve been on edge a bit this week. I’m still feeling fairly detached, but that may have more to do with not having an immediate connection to the campus. With all the stuff happening around V-Tech, there have been some interesting conversations going on. I’ve heard people making broad statements concerning depression and whether or not they should be able to purchase a gun, attend college, etc and that doesn’t make me very comfortable.
So many people seem to be looking for something to blame. I’m not sure if I can accept that idea that some thing is to blame for what happened. Some people seem convinced that there has to be someone left to blame. (The teacher who raised concerns over a screen play, the campus police who assumed a domestic shooter would adhere to a pattern of behavior, the administrator for allowing an admissions policy that allowed such a person to attend the university…)

The first question I heard in regard to this was how are the laws and policies going to change to prevent this from happening again. I can’t help but wonder why people assume that there was something missing in the rules that could have prevented it.

I heard someone say they understood why he would act that way. I can empathize with the hurt he felt, but I can not equate that to his actions. Why must there be something or someone else who made it happen?

Motivational Terror

A thought recently on my mind has been different types of motivation and how they what effect they trigger in people. For the record, trying to motivate me through fear causes a reaction that is usually the opposite of the desired outcome.

Types of Motivations:

  • Fear
  • Intimidation
  • Praise
  • Encouragement
  • Shame
  • Challenge
  • Bribery
  • Guilt
  • Award

I'm thinking about asking my team to consider these topics and honestly tell me what best motivates them. I wonder if they'll bolt for the door or tell me the truth.

My answer - Challenge
